An economic consultant (Tischler & Associates) prepared a report that estimated the tax consequences of certain Sarasota County land uses. It measured the taxes generated by each land use and the cost for government services needed to accommodate those same land uses. Some land uses resulted in positive net revenues others created cost for government services in excess of the taxes they generated. This editorial revues the report and makes recommendations for its use.

Private property rights are a fundamental and essential component of what makes America a nation of unequaled liberties. The government taking of these rights is an issue of critical concern and deserves the emphasis it receives. This editorial explores the “giving” side of the property rights equation, and emphasizes the need for government agencies to consider fiscal obligations when considering the expansion of land use intensities.
